Tamil Nadu’s Salem Sago Gets GI Tag

Key Points: 

  • Salem Sago, locally popular as Javvarisi from Tamil Nadu’s Salem District, has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Sago is popularly known as Sabudana and tapioca pearl and Sago Pearls in India.
  • Sago is a wet starch powder which is extracted from raw tapiocas roots. Tapioca is a crop cultivated mainly in Tamil Nadu.
  • The proposal for GI tag to Salem Sago was filed by Salem Starch and Sago Manufacturers‘ Service Industrial Cooperative Society Ltd. known as Sagoserve.
  • The GI tag provides legal protection for the intellectual property of sago producers. This will ensure that only members of Sagoserve can use the Salem Sago name.
  • Tamilnadu has total 59 products with GI tags.

Indian Navy’s INS Sumedha Takes Part in ‘Exercise Bright Star-23’ in Egypt

Key Points:

  • Recently, INS Sumedha arrived at Egypt to participate in ‘Exercise Bright Star-23’. The exercise is a joint military drill in which 34 countries have participated.
  • INS Sumedha is a domestically built Saryu class Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel. It is a part of Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet. INS Sumedha is a third ship of the Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel (NOPV) Project.

Indian Coast Guard participates in 19th HACGAM meet in Istanbul.

Key Points:

  • The Indian Coast Gurad (ICG) recently participated in the 19th Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (HACGAM) held in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • This 19th HACGAM security meeting took place from September 5 to September 8.
  • The 18th edition of HACGAM was hosted by the Indian Coast Guard in New Delhi in 2022.
  • The HACGAM is a group of 23 Coast Guard agencies and two associate members, who cooperates in the maritime security.

NPCI Introduces Exciting Features on UPI: Voice-Enabled ‘Hello UPI,’ Credit Line, and UPI Lite X

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has brought enhancements to it’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system with ‘Hello UPI’, Credit Liine and UPI Lite X.

‘Hello UPI’: Voice-Enabled Payments

  • The ‘Hello UPI’ feature allows the users to send money by calling a number from their registered number.
  • This voice-enable feature was unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai.

Credit Line on UPI

  • The NPCI also introduced a credit line on UPI. User can now use the pre-sanctioned credit limit offered by their bank on UPI platform.

UPI Lite X: Payments Without Internet Connectivity

  • The NPCI has introduced ‘UPI Lite X’ for the UPI platform. User can now make payment when there is no internet connectivity.
  • The UPI Lite X uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for transaction.

Famous Hindustani Classical Vocalist Malini Rajurkar passes away at 82

  • Malini Rajurkar passed away at the age of 82 in a hospital in Hyderabad.
  • Malini Rajurkar was associated with Gwalior Gharana. She has expertise in the ‘Khayal’ and ‘Tappa’ genres.

US Open Tennis, Novak Djokovic created history by winning 24th Grand

  • Novak Djokovic has won his 24th Grand Title slam title after defeating Danill Medvedev in US Open Final.

Coco Gauff wins US Open Women’s Grand Slam Championship

  • In US Open Women’s Grand Slam championship, Coco Gauf secured her first US Open title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka.

Japan Successfully Launches Lunar Lander ‘SLIM’ into Space

Key Points:

  • Japan’s space agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has successfully launched a lunar spacecraft.
  • The Rocket H-IIA took off from Tanegashima Space Centre with a lunar lander called Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM).
  • The H-IIA also carried an X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) satellite. The XRISM satellite is a joint project of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), JAXA and the European Space Agency.
  • Japan had two failed lunar landing missions previously.
